Consultancy: Head, London
Role: Coaching | Workshop planning and facilitation
I showcased a number of best-in-class data visualisation examples to give the team an idea of what good looks like and formulated a number of easy steps that would help construct well-designed data reports. In addition, I baselined the team's knowledge with regards to key design principles such as layout, colour, hierarchy and typography.
Understanding the end user's needs is vital in order to create well-structured data stories. I wanted to put the team into the shoes of their audience and created persona worksheets that would crystallise key needs of time-pressured stakeholders or other analysts.
The team arrived at a number of core user needs that needed to be prioritised. Each team member gave their vote on what they thought was the most urgent need that needed to be fulfilled. The team then separated into groups and received briefs to sketch the data reports. While sketching, the groups were able to lean back on the principles and steps they had previously learned about and that would ultimately allow them to create insightful stories.
